How does pausing and resuming payments work with expiring memberships?

Expiring memberships are a special type of recurring subscription in WrestlingIQ that is commonly used for 'commitment' type contracts. For example: if you commit to 3 months of training, your cost is $200/month, but if you commit to 12 months your cost is $175/month, etc.

Expiring subscriptions actively expire on the expiration date, unless the customer renews their subscription before the expiration date.

In other words - these subscriptions are an agreement between the club and customer for a set amount of training time for a set amount of money.

On payment pause, WrestlingIQ calculates the time left

When you pause payments on an expiring subscription, WrestlingIQ will calculate how many days are left on the contract for you:

On payment resume, the expiration date is changed based on days left on the contract

Typically with an expiring contract, the expiration happens on the day of your original billing date. When you resume payments on an expiring subscription, the expiration date is changed to compensate for your days remaining (and so that the club is not losing money).

The billing date remains unchanged - they will be charged on their next bill date as normal.

Example

Let's say you offer a year of training for a monthly amount (e.g. a subscription with a billing interval of 1 month, for 12 months).

  1. Customer purchases subscription on Oct 1 2024. Their expiration is set for Oct 1 2025, with a billing date of the first of the month.
  2. Customer pauses payments for two weeks from July 1 to July 14, and then resume payments.
  3. The expiration date will be kicked out to October 14th.
  4. The customer will be charged on October 1st 2024, so the club still receives their full contracted total.
  5. On October 14th, the subscription will expire and the customer will need to renew or re-sign up.

Policy recommendation

In general, pauses don't make a ton of sense with expiring memberships. The whole point of them is that a customer is committing to a set billing cycle up front. Many clubs that use this model will have a pause policy in place that states there needs to be extenuating circumstances (such as an injury, family issue, etc) for pauses to be approved and will put that inside of WrestlingIQ's Document area for e-signing by parents.
